Ticket tax takedown

Calgary – Official Opposition Service Alberta Critic Darshan Kang is elated by the government’s long-overdue decision to scrap the $15 vehicle search fee.

The fee – a tax by any other name – would have cost municipalities and police forces tens of millions of dollars, a drain on resources that shocked municipal leaders and police chiefs.

From the day the search fee was announced, Alberta Liberals raised the issue in the Alberta Legislature and hammered the government for a surcharge that would do such harm to Alberta communities.

“We were the only party in the legislature to consistently hammer the government over this ticket tax,” Kang says. “We stood alongside the mayors and police chiefs because we knew the harmful impact the tax would have on city budgets and our police forces.”

Kang regrets that the government caused such anxiety and distraction for municipalities throughout the summer, but he’s glad that the Tories have finally come to their senses.

“Our message throughout this battle has been consistent; axe the tax,” Kang says. “For once, the government listened, and now our police forces can concentrate on what really matters: keeping Albertans safe.”

The Alberta Liberal Caucus…There’s a better way.
