Statement from David Swann on the Labour Day Weekend

The Labour Day weekend is a time of transition and remembrance, a time to celebrate families and friends, a time to commemorate the workers who have improved our quality of life and fought for human rights.

As Albertans enjoy a weekend at one of our provincial or national parks, BBQs with friends or simply some quiet time at home, I hope we can all pause for a few moments to remember and thank the generations of workers who have built the civil society we enjoy today.

Sadly, Alberta lags behind other provinces when it comes to worker rights and worker safety. It remains one of the most dangerous provinces in which to work in the country, with fatality rates far above the national average. And despite constant pressure from the Alberta Liberal Caucus, farm workers remain unprotected by occupational health and safety laws.

Wherever they ply their trade, workers deserve safe workplaces and the protection of law. The Alberta Liberal Caucus will continue to fight for safer workplaces and the rights of working men and women.
