PC mismanagement of mental health services failing Albertans
Edmonton – Alberta Liberal Health Critic David Swann says government mismanagement of both inpatient and outpatient mental health services is putting Albertans and their families at risk.
Noting a December 2011 report by the Health Facilities Review Commission in Calgary, Swann says there is a long-standing shortage of beds for psychiatric crisis and zero surge capacity. It currently takes four to six months for mental health assessment and treatment, creating unacceptable suffering and risk of harm to individuals, their families or caregivers.
Furthermore, the shortage of mental health beds contributes both to emergency room overcrowding and, in some cases, inadequate treatment.
“Albertans have contacted me personally to inform me of direct injury to them and their family, as well as preventable legal and criminal results due to inadequate response to their cries for help,” Swann says.
Swann says the government must do a better job of integrating institutional and community mental health services to address addictions homelessness and mental illness. Alberta Liberal policy calls for expanded long-term care to relieve pressure on hospitals, more family doctors (who form the front lines in treating those with mental illness), and improved access to mental health professionals.
“For years, the Auditor General has told the government that it must do more to address mental health concerns in Alberta,” Swann says. “Lives are at stake. It’s time to act.”
