Alberta Liberals applaud Calgary airport tunnel deal

City shows resolve while Tories abdicate responsibility

Calgary – Word that the City of Calgary and the Calgary Airport Authority finalized a deal today on the airport tunnel was met with thunderous applause from the Alberta Liberals.

Calgary-McCall MLA and Alberta Liberal Transportation Critic Darshan Kang, who has been a staunch supporter of the tunnel from day one, praised the city for its commitment and perseverance. “This project has had nine lives,” says a relieved Kang, noting that it appeared very close to death on more than one occasion.

Kang singled out Ward 3 alderman Jim Stevenson and Mayor Naheed Nenshi for their efforts in getting a deal done with the airport authority. “Without the hard work and resolve of those two gentlemen, this project would have been grounded long ago,” says Kang. “Residents of northeast Calgary and indeed all Calgarians owe them a debt of gratitude.”

With funding for the required interchanges still up in the air, Kang intends to continue pressing the Alberta government to help pay for these. “This is not an unreasonable request,” says Kang, who challenged the government again on its short-changing of municipalities through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI). “Until MSI grant allocations reach promised levels, the province simply can’t expect municipalities to go it alone when it comes to major infrastructure projects such as this.”

The Alberta Liberal Caucus…There’s a better way.
